The Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival

Celebrated in Japan every July, Hakata Gion Yamakasa is a festival marked by teams of men racing through the streets carrying huge, elaborately decorated floats called kakiyama which weigh one ton and are about 5 meters (around 16 feet) tall. There are also stationary floats called kazariyama which stand over 10 meters (almost 33 feet) tall and weigh over two tons. This festival attracts up to a million spectators each year.
